Reflections on 12th Jan Protest

By Khurram Ali

Karachi Bachao Tehreek has evolved into a truly working-class organization, with over 70% of its membership comprising residents of working-class neighborhoods, who now play a significant role in decision-making.

Two key factors have contributed to this transformation:

  1. A strong base of working-class and other oppressed sections who have been pushed to the brink, with nothing left to lose as even their small homes have been demolished.
  2. The practical adoption of the ideological principle of “from the masses, to the masses,” ensuring that the voices of the people remain central to the movement.

The organization’s leadership is equally revolutionary, with a central committee comprising 80% young women. In Pakistan’s middle-class communities, women often embody a unique revolutionary zeal and sense of collectivism, both vital for any organization rooted in class struggle.

By becoming a genuine political force of working-class neighborhoods—both in representation and decision-making—it is no more easy for the government to suppress us.

We demand the Sindh Government to:

  • Immediately provide plots and complete construction funds to the affectees of Gujjar, Orangi, and Mehmoodabad Nullahs.
  • Register all missing IDs, as many affectees continue to suffer due to the flawed survey conducted solely through drones.
  • Halt the bulldozing of Mujahid and Wahid Colony and resettle the residents on their original land.

If these demands are not met, we will be compelled to stage a sit-in at the Commissioner’s Office or the Chief Minister’s House.

The class-struggle will persist as long as the class-based system remains.

“Women hold up half the sky.”
